Having teamed up to raise funds for AIDS victims and urge female fans to practice safe sex,

CYNDI LAUPER and LADY GAGA did their best to out-quirk each other at a New York soiree.

The eccentric spokeswomen for M.A.C. Viva Glam 2010 have each launched their own lipsticks to benefit the charity - and their presence couldn't have been ignored at last night's amfAR gala.

A knickers-flashing Gaga looked like she'd just taken a bath in diluted chalk, while Cyndi stayed true to her 80s roots in a pair of eye-catching Lycra leggings.

However, despite their penchant for extreme fashion - there's nothing light-hearted about the message they've been assigned to spread.

The Poker Face star - who also performed at the event - said: "Everyone has that phone call of, 'Oh my gosh, you wouldn't believe what I did last night! I was so stupid, I didn't use a condom!'

"There's all this laughter on the phone - I've gotten those phone calls. It's our job as friends to say to one another, 'I don't know why you're laughing because it's very serious!'

"I want to take as much time as I can to speak out about this because I really don't feel that there's enough women that are really educated about how quickly AIDS is spreading, how dangerous it really is, how many people really have it.

"I want to be an example for young women."

Earlier in the day, Gaga turned up on Good Morning America to encourage women to act cautiously in the bedroom.

Again, her chosen attire - World War I-style headgear, JOHN LENNON shades and semi-transparent gown - drew about as much attention as her sex advice did.

She clearly agrees with Cyndi that girls really do just wanna have fun...
